Today, I’m going to walk you through a breakthrough I had this year that has nothing to do with business, but may impact my companies more than any framework ever has.

The best founders in the world have a disproportionate skill at picking the right things to focus on.

But here’s what most people don’t talk about:

Your ability to make great strategic decisions fluctuates. Not just based on frameworks or experience, but on your mood and energy.

If you’ve been following along with me this past year, I’ve been very transparent about how variable my mood and energy are. 

My stress tolerance was lower, and as a result, my performance as a founder dipped.

The Breakthrough: It Was Biochemical

At the start of this year, I committed to going through a biohacking concierge service to improve my health (and, in turn, my mood and performance).

They ran diagnostics using blood, hair samples, and a mouth swab.

The first thing they told me was that my GABA levels were low.

And if you’re like me, your first thought is:

“What the hell is GABA?”

Here’s the simplest way to understand it:

GABA is your brain’s brake pedal.

Cortisol is the gas pedal. It keeps you alert and stressed. GABA slows nerve activity down. It’s the signal that tells your nervous system it’s okay to relax.

If your GABA is low, your nervous system stays in “high alert” mode even when there’s no real danger.

And that can show up as:

  • Racing thoughts you can’t shut off

  • Feeling “wired but tired”

  • Low stress tolerance

  • Poor sleep

  • Muscle tension

Now think about this through the lens of being a CEO.

Low GABA doesn’t just mean you’re tired. It breaks your prioritization filter.

Without the “brake pedal,” your brain can’t distinguish a minor email from a major crisis.

That leads to:

  • Reaction over strategy

  • The 3:00 AM P&L loop

  • Irritability that bleeds into your team

  • Decision fatigue by noon

You can have the right strategy on paper, but if your nervous system is firing on all cylinders, you will default to reactivity. And reactivity kills scale.

When I zoomed out, this hit me hard:
