I’m going to be real for a second: Running a marketing agency is a slog. 

Running any company as an executive founder, for that matter, is hard. Crack open any business book, and you’ll see that it starts with some form of war story that ends in redemption.

It’s something that any of us who achieve the seven or eight-figure threshold know all too well; we have the battle scars from our trials and tribulations to prove it.

The Year That Forced a Reset

This uphill battle has been no different for me. And it’s been especially difficult in the last 12 months due to the aftermath of the fire. 

The fire made me realize that personal fulfillment is something I had lost sight of. Business has become less and less fulfilling the longer I play the game. 

Of course, there are moments in business where I feel fulfilled. But like any successful founder, I'm acutely aware that true success is primarily about enduring the pain, stress, and monotony.

This is why, as I've mentioned in a previous newsletter, I’m making 2026 the year that I get back to holistically and successfully living. 

And I don’t just mean achieving financial success. It includes taking care of my mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, as well as the health of my family. Like most of you, I’m always striving to live a balanced, holistic life.

Why I Said No (More Than Once)

In December of 2025, a previous client of mine asked to pay me for a consultation. 

I declined. 

I told them I was too busy managing the multiple businesses I had, and now, with two under two, my work schedule has become a lot more restricted. It would be too much of an opportunity cost, and financially, no matter what he paid me, it wouldn't make sense.

But then in January, I had another previous client come and ask me the same thing. 

And once again, I declined, giving him the same reason. 

But this founder was different. He was persistent; he did not give up, and clearly wasn’t taking no for an answer. He eventually convinced me to work with him for a month and then reevaluate from there.

And honestly, I was not anticipating what I would feel as a result of this experience.

The Moment It All Clicked Again

I'm feeling so much gratitude. 

For the first time in a long time, I feel a significant amount of fulfillment from helping someone. It reminded me why I got into this business in the first place.

As I've built more layers between the end customer and me, I better understand their pain, and can see all the success stories we have. But because I am not personally driving those success stories, I don't feel it on an acute level. 

After working with this young founder for the last couple of weeks, I’ve found a deep sense of fulfillment from helping him. He’s already texting me almost every day about how excited he is, how much more money he's now making, and how he's having a blast.  

This is why I'm going to get back into the one-to-one consulting game…kind of.
