Both SOPs and training are essential for scaling an agency.

However, most agency owners still can't tell which is which…

Here's a quick breakdown of the difference between SOPs and training:

SOPs:

  • Teach people what to do.

  • Are typically simple. 

  • Help you take care of day-to-day administrative stuff.

  • Provide only ONE solution to ONE problem.

  • Can be used to train new employees or to ensure that everyone on your team is following the same processes.

Training:

  • Teaches people how to think.

  • Can be delivered in a variety of ways.

  • Helps people to understand the principles behind the tasks they are performing so that they can make informed decisions and adapt to change.

Training consists of a series of variables.

To scale, you need to know the skills your talent needs to perform effectively.

Enter The Training Matrix.

Here is how to use this matrix and make one for your business:

  1. Identify the role you want to make this for (start with the most complicated and work your way to the least). 

  2. Think through all the skills that are needed for this role- identify both the category & skill.

    1. This matrix is a living & breathing document, so continually add rows as needed.

  3. Input your team members who are in that role into the matrix (shown in row 5).

  4. Have them fill out the matrix, and have their manager fill out the matrix.

  5. Set a meeting to review & compare results, share findings, and build a specific training plan for this employee.

The issue with most training programs is that they are not intentional…

They don't get the desired result because they aren't connecting what we need versus what we have.
